Olubadan sues Gov. Ajimobi, 23 others

The Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji, has sued Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and 23 others for crowning 21 kings in Ibadan land on August 27, 2017.

According to the monarch, the governor did not consult the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs before embarking on crowning the kings, thereby, making the exercise illegal and void.

Joined in the suit are the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, the local chiefs (Baales) and the eight high chiefs who were crowned kings.

In the suit, which was filed at the High Court of Justice of Oyo State and dated September 19, the monarch alleged that the governor violated the Chiefs Laws Cap 28, arguing that he has no power to confer anybody the right to wear a beaded crown.

The monarch, in the suit is seeking an order setting aside the Gazette 14 and 15 of Volume 42 of August 23 and 24, 2017, made by the governor and which conferred the right to wear crown and coronet on the elevated high chiefs and baales.

One of the representatives of the monarch, Abiodun Abdulraheem, said that sections of the Chiefs Laws had been explored to challenge the defendants.

He said: “The Olubadan is contending the fact that before you can exercise any power under the section of the Chiefs Law, you must, as a matter of necessity, consult with the Oyo State Council of Chiefs and Obas.

“As far as the monarch is concerned, the council has not been holding meetings, by virtue of the directive of the governor in 2011. Since the council is not sitting, the governor could not have consulted with it before going on to carry out the action that led to the crowning of the kings.

“There is no provision that says that the governor can waive consultation with the council if it is not sitting. The law is clear on this matter. As it is today, the Olubadan of Ibadan is the chairman of that council, even though the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, is contending that in court.

“In all the provisions of the Chiefs Laws, beaded crown is mentioned and not coronet, which the government claimed was given to the baales who were elevated to kings. The government stated that it gave beaded crowns to the high chiefs and coronet to the bales. But there are no provisions for coronet in the state Chiefs Laws.”

The Olubadan also alleged that the governor would not hesitate to remove him because of his opposition to the review.

Naija News learnt that the Olubadan children chieftaincy review had been a source of discord and animosity among Ibadan elites in recent time, particularly the Olubadan and the Oyo State governor.

Other chiefs in Ibadan have also challenged the legality of the mass coronation carried out by the governor in court. They include an Ibadan High Chief and a former governor of Oyo State, Rashidi Ladoja; Abdul Jelil Karimu, among other indigenes of Ibadan land.

In his suit, some of the orders the Olubadan sought include,
“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the fourth to 24th defendants from wearing of beaded crown/coronet crown and from parading themselves as beaded crown/coronet crown wearing Obas in Ibadan land.

“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the first defendant by himself or any of his officials, servants or agents acting pursuant to his instructions from initiating any process or taking any step towards intimidating, harassing, threatening, suspending, removing deposing or taking any action whatsoever detrimental to the Claimant personally or his office as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, more particularly with respect to the crisis caused by the purported amendment to the Olubadan chieftaincy Declaration and Related Matters as contained in Gazettes No 14 and 15 at volume 42 of 23rd and 24th of August, 2017.”

“Declaration that for there to be an amendment to the 1959 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration the Chieftaincy Committee proposing such amendment must be composed of Recognised chiefs by virtue of provision of Section 5 (2) of the chiefs Law of Oyo state CAP 28 laws of Oyo state.”

“Declaration that for there to be an amendment of the 1959 Olubadan of Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration, there must be in existence a Chieftaincy Committee set up in accordance with the provisions of the Chiefs Law of Oyo state 2000.”

“Declaration that the first defendant does not possess the power and authority to confer on anybody/person including the fourth to 24th defendants the right to wear a beaded crown and coronet crown in violation of the Chiefs Law Cap 28 Laws of Oyo state 2000.”

“Declaration that the elevation of the 4th to 24th defendants to the rank/level of an Oba (king) and installation of the said 4th to 24th defendants as kings entitled to wear beaded crown and/or coronet crown by the first defendant without a consultation with the Oyo state council of Obas and Chiefs is illegal, null and void and ultra-vires the powers of the first defendant under chiefs law CAP 26 laws of Oyo state.”

“An order setting aside gazette no 14 and 15 of volume 42 of 23rd and 24th August, 2017 respectively made by the first defendant which confer on the 4th and 24th defendants the right to wear beaded crown and coronet crowns, same being in breach violation and in conflict with the provisions of the chiefs laws cap 28 laws of Oyo state, 2000.”

“An order setting aside the installation of the 4th to 24th defendants (done on Sunday 27th August, 2017) made pursuant to gazette No 14 and 15 of volume 42 of 23rd and 24th August 2017 as same is in conflict with the provision of the chiefs law cap 28 laws of Oyo state 2000 and is to that extent null and void.”

JOHESU strike paralises FMC Keffi

Normal healthcare services have been paralised at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi in Nasarawa State following the indefinite strike embarked on by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).

A NAN correspondent monitoring the situation reports that officials of the union were seen directing members who resumed work to go back home in their interest.

Mr. Achimugu Isaiah, the JOHESU Chairman, confirmed this on Thursday while briefing newsmen in Keffi.

Other health workers complied with the strike order except medical doctors who are not members of JOHESU.

Isaiah said that they decided to join their colleagues on the nationwide industrial action following a directive from the national body of the union in the interest of the health sector.

According to him, the primary aim of every health worker is to see that the welfare of patients is improved, saying they have no option than to embark on the strike to press home their demands for improved facilities and condition of service.

“This briefing was necessitated in order to sensitise the patients and the public to know the reasons why we have joined the nationwide JOHESU indefinite strike declared by our national body.

“The 7-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government by our national body has elapsed yesterday, hence the need for the indefinite strike. So, we are telling the public to bear with us because they might not know the reasons why the strike was declared.

“The reasons why we have embarked on the strike is nothing but because the government has failed to address our demands which included review of retirement age from 60 years to 65 years, demand for autonomy of the teaching and specialist hospitals.

“Inadequate funding is also a reason why we embarked on the strike. We want the Federal Government to abolish the scale to scale promotion, and salary review, among other demands,’’ he said.

Isaiah said that adequate funding of public health facilities would go a long way in improving on the standing of living and health status of Nigerians as well as discouraging medical tourism.

“If our hospitals are adequately funded, if our hospitals are well equipped, it will discourage medical tourism and serve the generality of the people,” he added.
The JOHESU chairman also called on the government to meet up with the demands of the health workers in order to resolve the dispute.

Reacting, Dr. Joshua Giyan, the Medical Director of the centre, appealed to the aggrieved workers to return to work to prevent loss of lives.

Illiteracy rate in Nigeria alarming – FG

The Federal Government, on Thursday, described the rate of illiteracy in the country as alarming.

The Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, made the remark when he paid a courtesy call on Gov. Alhaji Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

The minister and the delegates were in the state for a two-day International Literacy Day conference organised by the National Commission for Mass Education.

Adamu said the country had about 65 million to 75 million illiterates, describing the figure as unbecoming and high, considering the country’s population.

“Education is the bedrock of any country’s development and any country that does not educate its populace is bound to fail.

“Unfortunately, in Nigeria, we have a very large population of illiterates; the illiterates figure, considering our population, is unbecoming,’’ he said.

Adamu, who was represented by Mr. Jonathan Mbaka, the Director of Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, said the federal government was targeting educating out-of-school children.

The minister said this was part of its strategic plan to reduce the number of the illiterates in the country.

“The government is doing all it can to reduce the number of children that are out of school.

“This includes the adoption of inclusive education where every Nigerian will be given the opportunity to go to school, regardless of background, ethnicity and gender,’’ he said.

Adamu commended the governor’s wife, Hajiya Aisha Bagudu, for reducing the number of out-of-school children and illiterates in Kebbi State through her Mass Almajiri Literacy and Poverty Alleviation Initiative (MALPAI).

Responding, the governor said most of the security challenges the country faced were manifestations of the level of illiteracy in the country.

“We have an army of people whose inability to read can be exploited by divisive elements in the country

Bagudu commended them for ignoring the fears and tension created by a few group of people by assembling in the state to deliberate on how to reduce illiteracy in the country.

“I am very proud that we are hosting eminent delegates from across the federation at the time like this, where there is tension, and fear in Nigeria.

“For you to ignore fears that a few people cannot intimidate us is commendable.

“Our destiny remains in our hands and not allowing inconsequential elements to determine our fate is also commendable,’’ he said.

The governor attributed the high illiteracy rate in Nigeria to Boko Haram insurgency, saying that many of the sect’s followers only knew the Quran but could not interpret and digest its meanings.

Army Arrests 10 Kidnappers As They Discover Kidnappers’ Den In Ondo State

The Nigerian Army, 32 Artillery Brigade, on Wednesday claimed it arrested 10 suspected kidnappers after raiding their den in Akoko, Ondo State.

The Assistant Director of the Army Public Relations, Ojo Adenegan, disclosed this in a statement dispatched to journalists in Akure, the state capital.

Captain Adenegan, in the statement, said that the suspects, together with some of their informants, were nabbed through a special operation executed by the Nigerian Army.

He noted that the Brigadier-General of the 32 Artillery Brigade, James Ataguba, led the troops that combed and smoked out the hoodlums from their den in the Akoko axis of the state, which shares a border with Kogi State.

Captain Adenegan said;

“The commander and his troops did not leave any stone unturned where they raided,”

“They thoroughly searched various forested kidnappers’ camps and spots at the boundary between Kogi and Ondo states in Akunu Akoko, Ohogo and Ogale communities.”

The Army spokesperson explained that the special operation was carried out by the Army as a follow-up to rescue some of the abducted victims at Akunnu and Ose areas of the state.

According to him, the operation, which is still ongoing, aims to track down kidnappers and prevent them from committing their crimes, especially in the troubled areas of Akoko land.

‘Man United Rashford Is Better Than €180m Mbappe, €105m Dembele’- Gary Neville

Former Manchester United and Liverpool defender, Phil Neville believes that Manchester United teenage striker, Marcus Rashford deserves to be in discussions in the same level alongside PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

According to Neville, Rashford, who scored twice to lead the reigning EFL Cup champions to a 4-1 win over Burton Albion at Old Trafford on Wednesday, deserved praise.

“Everybody praises Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe but nobody talks about Rashford in this country,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Because he’s English we just say ‘he plays on the left wing, he’s OK’. He is up there with Dembele and Mbappe, who also play on either wing. People say you have to play Rashford as a centre forward but you can play him anywhere because he is good enough.

Neville said, “Rashford is in the same bracket as those two – £100m-£150m players – he is every bit as good as those two and can be in the future because he is improving every season.

He said, “He broke in under Louis van Gaal and set the world on fire, in his second season under Jose Mourinho everyone thought he wouldn’t play but he did in all the big games. Now he is adding goals to his game and he can be absolutely world class.”

Lesbian Pastors Get Married In The United States

Two lesbian pastors, identified as Pastor Twanna Gause and her partner, Pastor Vanessa Brown have reportedly gotten married in the United states.

According to reports, they were led by Bishops Levi Richards and Eugene Gathers, both of the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries

Bishop Richards said;

“She’s our spiritual daughter,”

Both men walked Ms. Gause down the aisle, a role she had initially hoped would be accepted by her father, the Rev. Sam Gause Sr., a Pentecostal minister who lives in Atlanta.

But Mr. Gause, citing “differences in theological beliefs,” refused his daughter’s invitation.

“My father would not come here because he does not believe in same-sex marriage,” Ms. Gause said.

“He told me the devil tricked me into this, and that if we had been married in biblical times, we would have been stoned to death.”

When contacted by the New York Times, he said;

“Twanna very well knows I’m not for that kind of lifestyle,” he said by phone in a calm and stern tone several days after the wedding.

“I believe that God wanted us to procreate through a natural process, and by no means am I happy about this because it is unnatural,” he said.

“I look at homosexuality as a mental disorder. If I start to tell you that I am an elephant, and start to behave as an elephant, that’s my choice, I choose to become an elephant. But you would probably choose to call a mental institution.”

Mr. Gause, long affiliated with the Center of Hope Church of God in Christ in Riverdale, Ga., said he had no immediate plans to contact his daughter. He was also disappointed her mother, his ex-wife attended the wedding.

“I will talk to her at some point, I suppose, if she calls me, but I will not initiate the call,” he said. “I do have some words for her that she needs to hear.

I’m not going to condemn her or judge her because I don’t have that authority, but judgement has already been established by God.”

When asked about Mr. Gause’s absence at the wedding reception, an elegant affair at il Tulipano in Cedar Grove, N.J., Bishop Richards said simply: “God has a way of honoring us when others won’t.”

Mary Ellen Brown, did not mince words when talking about her ex-husband’s refusal to attend.

“He has no right to judge them,” she said. “I tried to get him to come here tonight but it was a losing battle.

He asked me why I would even bother showing up, and I said to him, ‘All you need to remember is that Twanna is my daughter, and I love her, and I have her back no matter what she does, and that’s why I’ll be there.’”

Osun 2018: Battle For Aregbesola’s Office Begins

On Friday, September 1, the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, officially unbind those interested in vying for its ticket for 2018 governorship election in Osun state to declare their intention.

This signifies the commencement of intra-party struggle that would ultimately culminated in the choice of a candidate that would fly APC flag in the governorship election, only the 5th in the state since the return of democracy in 1999.

In the fold of the main opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party, the struggle to dislodge the incumbent ruling party has not taken a definite shape, as the party’s heart is still assailed with all manners of trouble over who occupies the seat of its chairman.

So, while APC’s major hurdle is producing a candidate that will be acceptable to all interests within its fold, the issue of who is the authentic chairman that will lead PDP’s quest for power, remains the first major examination the party must pass before search for the ‘totem of war’ that would not only unclip Aregbesola’s hold on major election deciders in the state, but also de-energise the high flying APC.

Not forgetting that the 2018 governorship election presents it with the best opportunity to return to power, after being controversially eased out in 2010 through Justice Clara-Binta Ogunbiyi’s-led panel, which nullified PDP’s victory in April 14, 2007 governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party, even with it’s house full of commotion, is still getting suitors courting it for 2018 guber ticket.

It is still fresh in mind the landslide victory of then APC candidate, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who incidentally entered into the history book as the first elected officeholder on the platform of the then freshly formed All Progressive Congress, APC, in year 2014 when he trounced the PDP candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, and expectedly the victory of the party in 2015 general election where it only lost two seats in 26-member Osun state House of Assembly and two National Assembly seats.

But since achieving all these feat, APC has been, somehow descending from its high horse of political successes, losing electoral contests to its main challenger in quick succession. The last two elections held in the state, APC lost both to PDP, the latest being the inconceivable loss of Senator Mudashiru Hussein of APC to Otunba Ademola Adelele of PDP in the recently held Osun West Senatorial Bye Election.

NANS urges FG, NASU, SSANU to shift ground

NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ) on Thursday urged Federal Government and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities ( NASU ) to shift ground for industrial harmony.

NASU National President Kadiri Aruna made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ) in Enugu.

NAN reports that NASU’s members and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities ( SSANU ) had been on strike for past three weeks over certain demands.

Aruna said that the strike which was called off by Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) early this week would not make much impact if NASU remained on strike.

He, however, said that NANS would engage the Federal Government as well as the leadership of NASU and SSANU to look to the plight of students and find a way to resolve issues.

“As a matter of fact, by next week we are going to write officially to Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education, NASU, SSANU and other stakeholders in tertiary education sector for them to consider Nigerian students.

“The recent call-off of strike by ASUU will not make an impact if the non-academic staff members of universities are not working.

“The strike of non-academic staff of universities means that the campuses, although opened, but cannot function normal,’’ he said.

Aruna, however, urged students to return to campuses and resume classes in order to meet up and cover the academic activities for the session.

“We want our members, Nigerian students, to resume lectures forthwith in order to show our commitment to learning and appreciate lecturers that had resumed classes,’’ he said.

‘NCC committed to achieving 30% broadband penetration by 2018’

NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission ( NCC ) says it is committed to achieving the 30 per cent approved National Broadband Implementation Plan by 2018.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, said this on Wednesday at the Nigeria Digital Innovation Conference in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference is sponsored by Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development ( CECAD ) in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Communication and NCC.

The theme of the conference is “Building a New Nigeria in Digital Economy: Policy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship’’

Danbatta, who was represented by Mr Reuben Muoka, NCC Head of Public Affairs, said that the plan was part of the 8-point agenda conceptualised for comprehensive national economic growth.

He said that Nigeria’s broadband penetration was empirically adjudged by the global telecom regulator, the International Telecommunications Union ( ITU ), as 21 per cent in 2017.

“We have witnessed the success of online shopping malls, online banking and other transactions in a way that it is being experienced in far more developed countries.

“We are supporting ICT innovations in our institutions of higher learning and among several youth organisations across the country,’’ he said.

Danbatta said that the Commission had taken the agenda as its guide in measuring regulatory impact and aligning development agenda in the course of regulating one of Africa’s biggest telecom market.

The Executive Vice Chairman said that the NCC would not relent in its effort at promoting investment opportunities and selling the country’s investment potentials to the international telecom community.

The NCC boss also said that the toll free 622 secondary consumer complaints initiative had been upgraded, adding that the success rate of resolution of consumer complaints on the platform had reached 75 per cent.

“We have intensified our monitoring and compliance activities to achieve sanity and compliance to the rules of the game.

“We are in the process of introducing a mandatory corporate governance code to improve the level of integrity of the industry,’’ he said.

Also speaking, Mr Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria ( PIN ), said that lack of commitment to innovative ideas accounted for the 56 per cent unemployment rate in the country.

Sesan, who recalled how he made headway through strong innovation in 1997, charged students to stop giving excuses, saying such could limit their future.

“I don’t think there is a reason for any student to graduate without a skill with the presence of the internet. Stop complaining about government.

“What you become in the future is the product of whatever you start now,’’ he said.

Mr Sunday Afolayan, President, Nigeria Internet Registration Association ( NIRA ), said the association was committed to ensuring that the identity and investment of Nigerians was maintained and protected.

Afolayan also said that the association would ensure that Nigerians participated favourably in the digital space.

Mr Bayo Oyeleke, Deputy Rector, The Polytechnic Ibadan, thanked the organisers for choosing the institution as the venue for the conference in the South West Zone.

Oyeleke said that the conference would open the windows for students who participate actively.

NAN reports that the conference was organised to promote innovation in tertiary institutions and as an avenue for students to interact with stakeholders and experts in the digital innovation world.

Biafra Is A Failed Project, We Are For One Nigeria – Igbo Community

The Igbo community in Adamawa State on Thursday dismissed the agitation for Biafra. Leader of the community, Godwin Onemaka while addressing journalists in Yola, described the struggle for Biafra as unnecessary.

Onemaka urged the agitators to consider the consequences of plunging Nigerian into chaos by divisive activities.

Citing the effect of another Civil war, Onemaka maintained that Biafra agitation had failed and there was no need to restart it again.

According to Onemaka, agitators should have a rethink because people of the South East extraction are looking for ways to develop there selves.

Onemaka said, “Biafra agitation has failed and there is no need to restart it; the agitators should consider the interests of the Igbo in other parts of the country.

“We, the Igbo in Adamawa, kick against the agitations for Biafra and we view it as an unnecessary capable of plunging the nation into crisis.

“We advise the agitators to stop, so that Nigeria will remain united and they should remember that since the agitation had failed in the past, revisiting it is unnecessary.

‘Nigeria records 58,000 maternal mortality’

Maternal-Mortality

A joint report by World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nation Population Fund ( UNFPA ), United Nations Children Fund ( UNICEF ) and World Bank has said Nigeria recorded 58,000 maternal mortality in 2015.

The report was presented by Dr Olusola Odujinrin at the 2017 Annual Faculty Day Lecture by the Faculty of Public Health and Community Medicine, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

The conference with the theme “Transition in Global Health Paradigms: What Hope for the Nigerian Women and Children?”, was held at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital ( LASUTH ), Ikeja.

The guest lecturer, Odujinrin said it was rather alarming to see Nigeria down the ladder of the Millennium Development Goals ( MDGs ) in spite of the abundance of its economic strength.

She identified the factors that contributed to the Maternal Mortality Rate ( MMR )as flawed government policies, education, culture, religion among others.

“It is most unfortunate that we are at this level of needless death as recorded by the international agencies where Nigerian women lost their lives to pregnancy and child related causes.

“The factors that contribute to this are diverse including education, culture, religion and lack of access to skilled health workers and necessary drugs.

“The prevalence also depend on several factors, including living in an urban or rural area, socio-economic status and geo-political zone.

“The most worrisome is the report from North-East where MMR is highest: 1,549/100,000 live births in comparison to the South-West zone where 165/100,000 was recorded,” she said.

Odujinrin said the MMR statistics from Nigeria needed to be given immediate attention, warning that the country might be on the brink.

“Currently, Nigeria has the second highest burden of maternal mortality in the world, and contributes about 15 per cent of the annual total global deaths which represent two per cent of the global population.

“The progress in reducing maternal ratio has been to slow. According to the Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey ( NDHS ) reports for 2008 and 2013, Nigeria achieved practically no reduction in MMR.

“Lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy-related causes according to NDHS reports also showed practically no change in the year under review.

“With this we all need to join the vanguard in making Nigerian women life a meaning if we don’t want to be on the brink,” she said.

Odujinrin said poor medical facilities in Nigeria was a hindrance to the attainment of the MDG Project, adding that the country’s policy makers needed to “roll up their sleeves.”

“The overall contributions of poor quality of health services to the huge burden of MMR in Nigeria, as revealed in the various situation analyses and assessment is alarming.

“There is a need to tackle the huge challenges and perform better in the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) in relation to MMR under Goal 3.

“It is imperative that we have a national focus in providing quality health care facilities and our efforts be dedicated to ensuring high quality of care to our mothers and children.

“It is not that we are bereft of ideas, but we lack political will and financial commitment enough to tackle this menance. No amount is too much for the lives of mothers, newborn and children,” she said.

Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, the Chairman of the occasion, the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof Wale Oke were among other dignitaries who graced the occasion.

‘My wife swears for me with her private part’

wife

A pastor, Bernard Towoju, who says he cannot tolerate his wife and her ill-nature and troubles, on Wednesday approached an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, seeking the dissolution of their marriage of 25 years.

Towoju said his wife, Abosede, was in the habit of going naked to swear for him with her private part.

“I cannot continue to make love with a woman who always swears for me with her private part,” he said.

According to him, Abosede is stubborn, wayward and troublesome.

“She once came to my office to fight me and tore my clothes in the presence of my colleagues. We fight on daily basis and hurt each other a lot.

“We always land in the police station after our fight, in fact, we are regular customers at the station,’’ he said.

The 53-year-old man also accused his wife of threatening his life.

“My wife always hits me with dangerous weapons whenever we are fighting.

“I had to run away from the house I built with my money 10 years ago to rent an apartment for safety.

“She chased me with cutlass, bottles and sticks; our neighbours can testify to that.

“I am afraid, I cannot sleep under the same roof with her with my two eyes closed,” he said.

He begged the court to dissolve the marriage as he was no longer interested in the relationship.

In her defence, Abosede, however, accused her husband of calling her a witch.

“He said everywhere he went for solution to his problems they always told him that I am behind his predicament.

“My hands are clean, I know nothing about his woes,’’ said the estranged wife.

“Bernard abandoned me and the children 10 years ago, I have been taking care of the children,” the 36-year-old fashion designer added.

The mother of four urged the court not to grant her husband’s request for the dissolution of the marriage, saying “I still love him.”

The court’s President, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case until Oct. 31 for further hearing.

“Herdsmen Were Not Labelled Terrorists Because They Are Criminals Unlike IPOB & Boko Haram” – Garba Shehu

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, has revealed why the Federal Government labelled Indigenous People of Biafra as terrorists and not the marauding Fulani herdsmen..

Garba Shehu also revealed he supported the Nigerian Army in its recent declaration that the Indigenous People of Biafra is a terrorist group.

Recall, earlier on Wednesday, The Federal High Court in Abuja has approved the application by the Federal Government, seeking the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Now, Mr. Shehu, who made this known while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, said the Federal Government had closely monitored the activities of the group, its inability to embrace dialogue, hence qualified to be called a terrorist organisation.

He also revealed the herdsmen did not fight to take over any region like IPOB and Boko Haram did..

He said;

“We looked at this organisation, we analysed it, and it fits the description of a terrorist organization.

If it fits the description of a terrorist organization, then it is a terrorist organization,”

Although the Presidential Aide admitted that the military by its declaration alerted Nigerians of their own analysis, he, however, revealed the Federal Government was bound to follow up “some processes.”

“That yes, it fits in and as Americans say, ‘If it walks like a duck, it moves like a duck, it looks like a duck, then it is a duck.’

“Therefore, that is it. That is their own description of it. So, the processes we are bound to follow since they are fully aware of the fact that from the point of view of the law, they cannot do what the law does not empower them to do.”

Mr. Shehu further explains that IPOB leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu had earlier aborted peace moves made by the governors of the five eastern states headed by Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi, as well as Senators from the region.

He said;

“IPOB itself has clearly indicated that they are not interested in dialogue. You know that in the run-up of these processes, the governors of the states in the region had put up a forum, IPOB said, ‘No, thank you, we are not interested.’

“The Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria set up a delegation and they said, ‘IPOB we want to speak to you,’ and they said, ‘no, thank you.’”

“Initially yes, it is clear that the leader had himself shut everyone out of the whole process,”

He then added;

“There is a difference between a criminal activity and a terrorist activity, yes the fulani herdsmen are a criminal gang and they are being treated as criminals according to the law of the country..

But IPOB like Boko Haram as a territory have carved on to themselves as a sovereign state of their own, they have should willingness to invade states and raised concerns in neighbouring states, like Kogi, Benue and have said they are interested in taking over Bayelsa and Rivers and have raised up a flag”

Mourinho calls for end to League Cup

NANS urges FG, NASU, SSANU to shift ground

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday urged Federal Government and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) to shift ground for industrial harmony.

NASU National President Kadiri Aruna made the appeal in an interview with pressmen in Enugu.

Newsmen report that NASU’s members and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had been on strike for past three weeks over certain demands.

Aruna said that the strike which was called off by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) early this week would not make much impact if NASU remained on strike.

International Peace Day: Monarch urges leaders to abide by constitution

The Chairman, Anambra Central Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Chukwuemeka Ilouno, has urged leaders to abide by the constitution and other agreements entered to with the people.

Ilouno gave the advice while speaking on the essence of the International Peace Day.

He noted that abiding by known agreements as well as set-down constitutional rules would build and sustain peace in any society.

“Why we should abide by the constitution is that it ensures that equity and justice is given to all,’’ he said.

He noted that the abandonment of the provisions of the constitution as well as selective implementation of them would cause inequity and strife.

“So we should love one another through abiding by the constitution and leaving up to agreements reached with others,’’ he said.

The monarch stressed the need for Nigeria to go back to the 1963 Constitution to get lasting peace in the country.

“Our country’s fore-fathers are determined to move the county forward both socio-politically and economically by coming up with that 1963 Constitution.

“That true Federal Constitution leads to the great improvement and achievements we had in the country within the 1960s before the military take-over of power,’’ he said.

Tthe United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declares Sept. 21 as the International Day of Peace to be observed all over the world.

According to the UNGA, it is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme for 2017 International Day of Peace is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.’’

‘NCC committed to achieving 30% broadband penetration by 2018’

Tags
